Level 3 Dental Nurse Diploma Overview

Dental Nurse Learner / Apprenticeship Overview:

The role of a Dental Nurse compliments the role of the Dentist and other dental professionals. Providing chair side support to dental professionals and delivering a high level of patient care is a key part of the Dental Nurses role.

Dental Nurses can work in a variety of different clinical environments and the Dental Nurse Apprenticeship covers all aspects of the clinical responsibilities required. The apprentice will be trained to gain the relevant qualification to apply to the General Dental Council (GDC) for professional registration as a dental nurse.

Dental Nurses are registered as professionals and have to work within the standards defined by the GDC Scope of Practice document. These are as follows:

  • a minimum Age requirement 16+
  • a minimum of 30 hours in the workplace up to 40 hours weekly
  • to enable a learner to get to Gateway, the learner must undertake the Level 3 Diploma in principles and practices of Dental Nursing and Functional Skills English and Maths – Level 2
  • learners must achieve 49 credits from the 17 mandatory units – including Basic Life Support with CPR
  • learners may need to undertake Functional Skills in English and Maths depending on their grades/qualifications
  • to be able to work chair side, learners must have the relevant vaccinations (Hepatitis B). They must have a test in approximately 3 months to check that they are protected. Up until this point, Learners can work on reception and in the decontamination room. A PPE policy and risk assessment must be in place by the employer
  • in relation to vaccinations, this may be offered through the dental practice using their own occupational health or learners may seek through own GP which may incur private costs
  • whilst in training, the learner will be covered by the employer’s indemnity insurance

Further duties will include Chair side support, clinical hygiene, administration and reception support along with clinical hygiene.

Upon completion of your level 3 Diploma, you will then register with the GDC.
